Stories in motion Words, sound and vision.

Posted on: Friday, April 28th, 2006

Sunday 7 May 2006 Time(s): 7.30pm Venue: Corn Exchange, Brighton & Hove
DJs: Longrange (Phil Hartnoll and Nick Smith)
Writers: Chuck Palahniuk, Irvine Welsh
Visuals by: c6.org

As godfathers of techno, Orbital (aka Phil and Paul Hartnoll) were, for almost two decades, the most creative and influential electronica act on the planet. Now in a brave new cross-cultural venture, exclusive to Brighton Festival, Phil Hartnoll and Nick Smith (an artist whose recording career for dance labels Dragonfly and Atomic Records has led to major film credits for Ridley Scott) combine forces as \’Longrange\’.

Together they limber up with cult novelists Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club) and Irvine Welsh
(Trainspotting) to create stories in motion. Home Spun Subversives C6.org provide the visuals – warping texts to imagery in a live processed ascii jam. Transplanting the creative impetus from the desktop to the live arena, writers, DJs and VJs jam back and forth with ideas and storylines to build a unique multilayered narrative in words, music and images.

Tracy Emin Book Signings

Posted on: Thursday, April 27th, 2006

TRACEY EMIN will be making two appearances to sign copies of her new DVD, TOP SPOT which marks her feature film debut as a director.

Thursday 27th April
Borders Bookshop, Islington
5.30pm

Friday 5th May
Tate Modern
7.30pm

Part fiction, part autobiography, TOP SPOT is set in Tracey’s hometown Margate, where a group of teenage girls explore their lives, their dreams, and their sexual experiences.

Their lives are then played out against the backdrop of the sleepy seaside town, the local funfair and the nightclub, Top Spot.

They play truant, they fall in love.

They chase after exotic locations, or they experience sexual abuse.

And then there are the repercussions of unwanted pregnancy too. By the end, Tracey herself appears with a final but hopeful solution.

Shot with a rawness evident in her artwork, it’s a blend of documentary and fiction with characters representing different aspects of the artist’s teenage life itself.

The DVD includes previously unseen footage, an audio commentary by Tracey herself and an alternative ending which adds to the film’s power.

As a personal to touch, she has designed an unique sleeve which will be available on the specially packaged, numbered limited edition version only.

For art and film collectors alike! (rrp £24.99)

BusStop art

Posted on: Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

“Old Street and its environs are famous for guerilla art. Half the buildings in the area are practically held together by a decades-thick veneer of spray paint, posters and wheatpaste. But in recent months, this creative street art has come ‘off the wall’ and entered the third dimension. A slew of surreal objects has been left atop the area’s bus shelters. Why? We don’t know. It’s bonkers. But brilliant. We particularly like this series of pronged potato-type things along the 55 route between Clerkenwell Road and Shoreditch High Street. The beauty is that they’re entirely invisible unless you’re on the top deck of a bus.
Think we just found the clinching argument for getting rid of the single-decker bendys and bringing back the Routemaster.”
