That Newsweek Afghanistan/Liebowitz Thing

Posted on: Friday, September 29th, 2006

It seems as if it's been hard to move on the web this last week without stumbling on somebody (rightly) mouthing off about the latest issue of Newsweek, which has as its cover story "Losing Afghanistan" across the whole world, except in the USA where there is some fluff on Annie Liebowitz's family with the headline "My Life in Pictures".

There are implications in this so plain to see that it's easy just to present the covers juxtaposed and say "look" and leave it at that. So it's very refreshing to see that the excellent political/photography/photojournalism blog Bag Note News has a much deeper look into the issues and implications including much on the fact that Liebowitz's late partner, Susan Sontag, was perhaps the last century's most widely respected theorizer on photography and renowned for her avoidance of the glare of publicity.

White Cube is pleased to present the work of Gabriel Orozco in his first exhibition with the gallery. To launch White Cube’s new space at Mason’s Yard, Orozco has developed his ongoing exploration of the readymade, mapping and geometry into a monumental new sculpture. In the ground-floor gallery, Orozco will show a group of new paintings from his ongoing ‘Samurai Tree’ series, which explore the range of permutations possible within a defined spatial and colour system.

PARIS, FRANCE.- Jeu du Paume presents Friedlander, on view through December 31, 2006. This is the most comprehensive survey to date of the photography of Lee Friedlander (American, b. 1934). Comprised of six early color portraits, 477 black-and-white gelatin silver prints, and 25 examples of Friedlander's books, special editions, and portfolios, Friedlander traces a prolific career that continues to thrive after half a century. Supplemented by a modest number of loans from the artist, the retrospective is largely drawn from MoMA's extensive collection of Friedlander's work. There are some 60 groups of photographs, each narrowly tailored by date, theme, and style. Groups that present distilled versions of Friedlander's books are identified as such. Completing the exhibition are seven vitrines displaying Friedlander's portfolios and special editions.

Our History Private View: 26th September, 6-9pm An Exhibition of original & editioned graphic art prints 1988-2006 27th-8th October Films at Vibe Bar Wednesday 5th October, 7pm

Club Culture could not have been as groundbreaking and forward thinking without the medium of graphic design. Cutting and pasting, before the advent of the digital age, artists working from their bedrooms, some too young to know what they were doing, sometimes being paid in kindness, these images at the time were playing a crucial part in the development of the culture, and now one of our only points of reference to a somewhat fuzzy time. Our history will exhibit and sell editioned signed prints of some of the most famous and ground breaking club-based graphic images from 1989 till the present day. You are invited to read about the artists, clubs and labels these images represented. The exhibition is the first of its kind. It will take the viewer through a historical journey through the images that shaped this period. Our History will be the first to start building a visual historical record of this era.

Artists taking part: Dave Little, Blue Source, Mark Wigan, Tomato, Michael Nash Associates, Tom Hingston, Central Station Design, Society (Dave Edmunds & Joe Edwards), Rogan Jeans, Back to Basics/Nick Grundle, Global Underground, Puscha, Mason Storm (Glare-N-Dazzle & Trash Fashion), Defected, Tummy Touch. ‘A short film about chilling’ By Angus Cameron & Kevin Sampson, ‘Weekender’ By Wiz, ‘Coming Down’ By D-notes Matt Winn, ‘High on Hope’ By Piers Sanderson, ‘Ibiza Freaks’ by Kika-d, ‘Love Ranch’ By Kerri Baldry, Tomato, Nat Finkelstein plus Global Underground & Big Chill shorts by Dom Phillips.
